Welcome to New AHBC Members
HOW DO YOU FIND OUT ABOUT RIDES?
First...Our website is cyclearlington.com --- this is where we post all Rides and Events! New rides are posted often, so check often
if you want to ride with the club over the weekend or in the next few days. The ride calendar is on the home page below the photos and club news.
As a new member, you have a Membership Account for our website which lets you access the members` only section. You will receive a separate email with your temporary password. Your user name is your email address.
When you login for the first time, go to your account page to change your password, verify your contact information and update permission to share your email or phone in the membership directory.
Second...For last minute changes to the ride schedule... we use the AHBC Google Group
to send out group emails with ride updates. To be included in this group, you need to sign up.
To join the group, send a blank email to AHBCCyclist+subscribe@googlegroups.com
Some members have had issues joining the group. If you receive an error message joining the group, send a blank email to
AHBCCyclist-subscribe@googlegroups.com Supposedly the proper email address has a + sign some some members have reported
an error using the + sign and have found that a - sign works properly.
Previous messages sent to the group can be read here

the website.
Third.. We have a club account with RideWithGPS which allows you to download routes to your device or to print a cue sheet
for a route. If you want access to the club account, please send an email to ridewithgps@cyclearlington.com and someone will add your email address
to the account. This capability is for paid members only.

Fourth.. Many members use Zwift for indoor training when the weather outside is not conducive to riding.
Zwift is virtual cycling. If you want to participate with other club members
send an email to zwift@cyclearlington.com.
And finally...We do have a Facebook Page. Check it out at Arlington Heights Bicycle Club

WHAT KIND OF RIDES DO WE HAVE?
We have members who ride all year round! If the roads are clear and the weather looks good, check it out --- we may have a ride for you.
You can find the latest rides on the Rides&Events tab on the website. Plus, the Yahoo Group is a great way to stay on top of upcoming rides.
As a social riding club, we have a NO DROP policy. We will not leave you behind if you are riding slower or have mechanical problems.
Please select a ride with a comfortable pace and distance. If you are not sure of your pace and what group is appropriate for you --- just ask.
An experienced club member can help you figure this out! You can always ride with the leisure group first and see how it goes.
Below are a few types of rides we offer. Pace is rolling, not the average speed, on flat ground.
- Leisure Rides - pace of 10-12 mph, distance to vary upon skills.
- Intermediate Rides - pace of 12-14 mph, distance of 30 - 60 miles.
- Advanced Intermediate Rides - pace of 14-16 mph, distance of 40-100 miles.
- Advanced Rides - pace of 17- 20+ mph, distance of 40-100 miles.
- Bakery Rides - Intermediate to Advanced, joint rides with Wheeling Wheelmen Tuesday and Thursday mornings 30-40 miles.
- Half Baked Rides - Leisure rides which for those not wanting the speed or distance of the bakery rides.
- Tuesday & Wednesday Evenings - Intermediate starting from Recreation Park at 6:30pm.
- Sunday morning - Advanced Fast Rides (18-20 + mph).
- Newcomers Rides - usually in May or June. Look for details on the website.
- Zero Mile Rides - these are social events with no actual biking - to get us through the long winter months. Details announced via the Yahoo Group.
- Show and Go Rides - these are generally in the winter months and whoever shows up sets the pace.
Many weekend rides start from Frontier Park 1933 N Kennicott Dr., Arlington Heights. They usually include a stop for lunch. Weekday rides have various starting points.
All rides are posted on the website along with distance and pace, rest stop plans and return times. Other frequent
starting locations are on the website.
NOT SURE WHAT KIND OF RIDER YOU ARE?
We have the New Rider Mentor Program just for you! This program is available to any new club member that wants to be paired with one of our experienced club riders.
They can help you figure out which ride level best matches your cycling skills and interests and make sure you get introduced to the others on the ride.
The mentor volunteers are here to make you feel welcome and will answer any questions you have about the club.
If you want to take advantage of this, contact the membership chair at membership@cyclearlington.com
You can find the contact information for all the club officers and board members
WHAT ELSE DOES THE CLUB DO?
We have an ANNUAL PUBLIC EVENT.
The Arlington 500 -- the 1st Sunday in June -- This is a recreational bike ride on scenic roads in Lake County.
We offer the choice of 28, 42, 54 or 69 mile (500 furlongs) routes.
It is a fully supported SAG ride with a rest stop. We do charge an additional fee to participate in this event.
Members volunteer to help on Sunday. Club Members pre-ride the route on Saturday (the day before the event).
Club members volunteer their time to make this event a success.
We also have CLUB MEETINGS and SOCIAL EVENTS
We meet the 4th Wednesday of the month at Pioneer Park, 500 South Fernandez, Arlington Heights. Pioneer Park is just west of Ridge Ave and South of Sigwalt.
No summer or holiday meetings! General meetings start at 7:30 pm. Board meeting starts at 6:30.
We usually have a guest speaker with the topic related to biking... on how to change a flat, biking clothes to wear when it turns cold, physical and mental training for cycling,
or an interesting bike tour a club member has gone on recently.
For social events we have the July 4th Parade, an Annual Picnic and a Progressive Dinner and Zero Mile events.
Details are posted on the website or through the Yahoo Group.
